Rooted in our local communities

Although Arriva is a pan-European transport group, we’re still a local company at heart in the markets where we operate.

We do much more than get people from A to B; we partner with the private and public sector, as well as with third-party organisations to nurture community talent and skills, assist socially isolated individuals and care for the neighbourhoods we serve and the environment we operate in.

Helping to make services accessible to all

In 2022, Arriva Rail London (ARL) and Waymap, an audio navigation app designed to empower people with visual impairments to travel independently, undertook a trial with ten blind volunteers. Its success was recognised at the British Quality Foundation Excellence Awards, winning the Excellence in Innovation award.

“It was important to us to support this unique trial and show there are cost-effective solutions available to make travelling on public transport more accessible. Waymap’s technology needs to be rolled out across entire transport networks and in public spaces to provide a seamless experience for users, so we are hopeful the results of our trial will help them secure more support for their roll-out.”

Charlotte Whitfield

Customer Experience Director at Arriva Rail London

  • 100% of participants said they would be somewhat or much more likely to use public transport if Waymap was available.

  • 90% said they would be very confident or quite confident finding their way around a public place they were not familiar with using Waymap.

  • 80% said they would be somewhat or a lot more inclined to travel on their own if Waymap was available.

Supporting Ukrainian refugees

In support of Ukrainian nationals escaping the war, our colleagues in the Arriva UK Bus Customer Service Centre have been working hard to ensure refugees and their families are provided with free bus passes on arrival into the UK, with many seeing bus travel as a lifeline to help them find work, attend classes and take their children to school.

“We are very proud to be supporting this initiative. Our Customer Services team have really thrown their support behind the programme, with many colleagues volunteering to work extra hours and weekends to ensure applications are processed and bus passes sent out to families in record time. Our local postman has even started to stick around a little longer each day to ensure he can collect and deliver as many passes as possible.”

Paul Keithley,

Head of Customer Services, Arriva UK Bus

“Thank you for your invaluable service all year round – you make life much richer and fuller allowing refugees to travel – with sincere thanks and a hug xxx."

- Marguerite

“Thank you so much for the three-monthly bus passes you sent for the Ukrainian family I am sponsoring. They are very grateful because we live four miles away from shops and other services. You are so generous at Arriva and it is so much appreciated!”

Car

Arriva energises community car initiative in Leeuwarden in The Netherlands

Arriva works with local volunteers to provide an electric community car service to residents, after a city bus route was terminated. This is a positive demonstration of how we contribute to society and find innovative ways to address the needs of the communities we serve.
