Protecting the health and safety of colleagues, customers and the communities we serve

At Arriva the safety of our people and the communities we serve is a core value. So much so it is integrated within Our Purpose to connect people and communities safely, reliably and sustainably, and to deliver these services in a better way, every day.

Whilst travel by public transport is one of the safest modes of transport, we recognise that there are intrinsic risks in the work we do. We understand this and the importance of providing a safe and reliable environment for our customers. We have implemented robust policies, procedures, and standards across the group to reduce risk to all our stakeholders.

Being a large group has allowed us to build a strong European health and safety community, led by competent local leadership. The safety culture we have developed ensures we do the right thing while connecting people safely, reliably and sustainably.

The health and safety of everyone is our number one priority

At Arriva we all aim to connect people and communities safely. We have formalised this approach through the implementation of our three lines of defence model. It allows us to identify opportunities for improvement and share learnings - coordinated centrally, delivered locally.

First line of defence (local business)

Managed by each individual business, their expert teams monitor safety performance, deliver outstanding engineering safety performance and drive business continuity.

Second line of defence (Arriva Group Safety team)

The central team support the local businesses and provide assurance to the Arriva Management Board by delivering sample assurance visits to ensure Group Minimum Standards for safety.

Third line of defence (internal and external independent assurance)

This last line allows for independent scrutiny to drive continual improvement. This is most often done through ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certification but may also involve other stakeholders, such as clients.

The Health and Safety Committee

A subcommittee of the Arriva Management Board and chaired by the Chief Executive Officer, the Health and Safety Committee ensures that the highest standards of systems are in place to manage safety risk.

“It is my pleasure to chair the Safety Committee, holding my colleagues to account and driving continual improvement through a blend of overview and scrutiny of our current performance, best practice sharing, data analysis and learning from our activity.”

David Martin

Executive Chair

Arriva Group Safety team

At the corporate centre the Group Safety team works under three core pillars:

Setting standards

Across Arriva we have a set of minimum occupational safety, business continuity, engineering safety and environmental protection standards that are relevant across all our countries and transport modes. They set the benchmark for all operations to meet and act as the framework for our monitoring activities.

Coaching achievement

We approach the professional development of our local safety teams through mentoring, coaching and challenge. We also drive achievement organisationally through a targeted series of risk-based visits.

Deliver assurance

Our assurance activity is targeted, proportionate, accountable, transparent, and fair. In other words, we spend more time looking at the right things and less time looking at the wrong things.

Health and safety at Arriva

Protecting the health and safety of our colleagues and customers is our main priority.
