Our vision to help shape a future where passenger transport is the best choice has sustainability ambitions at its core. Our vision drives us as a business to find ways to make using passenger transport the more attractive and convenient way to go about our daily lives with less congestion on our roads and better air quality.

Our sustainability strategy prioritises issues that are important to our people, to the communities we serve, and to our passengers and clients, and where we believe we can contribute the greatest benefit; and our approach is structured around three core components.

Zero-emission buses and trains: decarbonising our vehicles for a more sustainable future

Buses and trains are some of the greenest forms of transport making travel more sustainable, but we have an opportunity to go further. We’re already making our fleets greener to contribute to the net-zero target and have set up a Zero Emission Institute (ZEI) to help in that endeavour.

Efficient management of materials: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle

Our goal is to become a resource efficient passenger transport operator, with a focus on implementing a circular approach to our use of materials.

We will:

  • Not view materials used today as future waste but as serving a future purpose.
  • Adopt circular practices and renewable processes once we no longer need the materials or resources.
  • Implement sustainable waste segregation practices for greater recycling of materials.
  • Reuse or donate materials rather than throw them away.
  • Increase the use of rainwater to clean our fleet of buses and trains.
  • Reduce energy usage in our offices and depot buildings.

Being a great employer and neighbour

Our colleagues are not just employees but members of the local communities we serve. It is critical that Arriva is a diverse and inclusive workplace, where everyone is treated fairly and with respect, can learn and grow their careers, as well as put back into the communities they serve and live in.

“We know that inclusive workplaces are more likely to have diverse teams – and this is a critical component of having a thriving and sustainable business for the long-term. By having more diverse teams, we can embrace different insights, perspectives, and experiences, challenging us to be even more innovative in the solutions and services we provide for our clients and passengers.”

Creating a workplace where everyone has equal opportunities to get ahead in their career

Our approach to inclusion therefore focuses on four core pillars:

  1. Workforce (who and how we hire, and how we develop our employees)
  2. Workplaces (how we value our employees, the physical spaces we provide and our culture)
  3. Clients and passengers (how we look after our passengers, ensure services are safe and accessible for all, and our approach to collaborating with our clients)
  4. How we serve our local communities (giving back opportunities, strengthening connections with our local communities and accessing new talent pools)
